Dr Stephen Longstaffe, Cumbria – ‘What has employability ever done for us?’: impact, student satisfaction, and the whole-programme approach to employability.

In a landscape increasingly shaped by fees, DHLE data, the NSS and the TEF, the need to focus on the employability of Humanities graduates has never been greater. This session is aimed at giving delegates the chance to reflect on the national context and the employability work being done at their own institutions by sharing practices and offering case studies from Cumbria, Newcastle and Teesside.

Rob Hawkes, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for English Studies at Teesside, will talk about the second-year module “English and the Real World”. This module is designed to encourage students to reflect on how the skills they develop on an English degree transfer to ‘real world’ situations. Now in its third year, the module has led to a number of successful student placements and graduate positions.

James Annesley, Head of Newcastle’s School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, will talk through the school’s Triple E employability event. Run in partnership with Accenture, Triple E is now in its second year and was recently nominated for an Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) award.

Stephen Longstaffe, Senior Lecturer at the University of Cumbria, will talk about the embedding of employability within Cumbria’s English Literature degree, which offers a model of disciplinary identity with employability as its core. After outlining the range of assessments, he will cover the impact of the programme on student satisfaction (100% last four years) and on relationships with local partners (Wordsworth Trust; National Trust).
