Chair: Stephen Longstaffe, University of Cumbria

Speakers:

Elaine Davies, Lancaster University – Using alumni for careers-focused problem solving

Joanna Fairweather, University of Edinburgh – Helping students explore careers in the world of books and publishing

Pamela Crawford, Stirling University – New directions in careers

Fiona Boyle, University of Cumbria – A case study in English and Careers collaboration

If English is to survive as a university discipline outside a few departments it must adapt, and in particular must take greater responsibility for preparing its students for the world of work. This panel brings together four experts in careers and employability to share the range of good practice already existing in universities, and to open a conversation between disciplinary and careers specialists. The panel will open with some short (c. 10 minute) presentations on the topics advertised, after which the panel will respond to the topics raised. There will be plenty of time for questions at the end!
