Performing Shakespeare’s Language Then and Now

Chair: Susan Anderson, Sheffield Hallam University

Speakers:

Dr James Harriman-Smith, Newcastle University – Shakespeare’s Words in Garrick’s Mouth

Kathleen O’Leary – Playing Shakespeare Now

James Harriman-Smith’s paper ‘Shakespeare’s Words in Garrick’s Mouth’ will open this workshop with a  demonstration of how eighteenth-century actors may have worked their way through Shakespeare’s scripts. We will then explore the speeches using practical work (no previous acting experience necessary).

Kathleen O’Leary’s paper ‘Playing Shakespeare Now’ will present two research findings around collaborative engagement in Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’: Jennifer Kitchen’s work with Primary school children in London and Kathleen O’Leary’s work with English and Drama students at HE level in Liverpool.
