Writing (out of) Wales: In Conversation with Alys Conran and Jonathan Edwards
Chair: Professor Matthew Jarvis, University of Wales Trinity Saint David/Aberystwyth University
Alys Conran, Bangor University
This panel showcases two important contemporary writers working in and out of Wales: novelist Alys Conran (shortlisted for the 2017 Dylan Thomas Prize) and Costa Prize-winning poet Jonathan Edwards.
Bringing together poetry and prose, readings and interviews, this event seeks to demonstrate something of the vibrancy of Wales’s post-Devolution Anglophone writing scene and to explore its emergence out of Welsh cultural, linguistic, and political contexts.
Wales Studies scholar Professor Matthew Jarvis will lead the discussions.
Organised by the Association for Welsh Writing in English www.awwe.org
Alys Conran’s novel Pigeon (Parthian, 2016) was the first novel to be published simultaneously in English and Welsh and was shortlisted for the International Dylan Thomas Prize.
Jonathan Edwards was born and grew up in south Wales. His first collection My Family and Other Superheroes (Seren, 2014) won the Costa Poetry Prize 2014.
Matthew Jarvis is the author of numerous publications on the recent English-language poetry of Wales.
