Academics in the Classroom: How Can Universities Deliver English Outreach for Schools?
Chair: Adrian Barlow, English Association
Speakers:
Dr Pamela Bickley, Godolphin and Latymer School – English Outreach: The Student Perspective
Dr Jane Rickard, University of Leeds – English Outreach and Widening Participation
Dr Catherine Redford, University of Oxford – English Outreach and the Early Career Researcher
This panel will bring together three speakers from across the English community, all of whom have an interest in the ways in which academics from universities can deliver outreach for school students and their teachers. We will consider how we provide English outreach, examining the merits and limitations of the various ways in which academics can offer academic content for schools and reflecting upon how we can innovate in the future. We will also think about why we deliver outreach, focusing on the potential motivations of both academics and schools for becoming involved in partnerships (including the potential for outreach to aid transition from A-level to university). The discussion will consider the extent to which outreach should be research-led; how academics can build working relationships with teachers; and how outreach work can respond to the current curriculum changes.
